KAMEY AWARDED CLIMATE FRIENDLY TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP

We are super happy to announce that our tour leader, Fayaz ‘Kamey’ Hussain has been awarded a scholarship for this years Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) Diploma. With our commitment to driving change and action including through our Climate Action Plan, Secret Paradise is already listed on the Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) registry, managed by the SUNx Program, so we are delighted that Kamey has been selected for the 2024/2025 CFT diploma course.  We can’t think of a more suitable candidate for this opportunity, Kamey has been a committed member of the Secret Paradise Maldives team from the beginning of our journey in 2012, providing him a firm grounding in sustainable travel and tourism.

Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) Diploma is a world first and trains students to support Travel & Tourism companies and communities in becoming sustainable and climate resilient; as well as in transforming to achieve Zero GHG emissions by 2050.

CFT Diploma is organized by SUNx Malta in partnership with the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) Malta. Their core mission is to advance Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) in every UN country, starting, where Climate Change is most threatening and where Tourism is most needed – in the world’s Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

In year one students will receive 300 hours of in-depth teaching about the Climate Crisis and Sustainability as they relate to Climate Friendly Travel – Paris 1.5, SDG linked and nature positive. Interactive lectures will be given by 25 of the leading tourism academics in the world. Students will review carefully curated top journal and online source material, to bolster knowledge of Transport, Hospitality and Travel Services exposure and response to the existential Climate Crisis.

In year two students will undertake an internship with SUNx Malta, as a Climate Friendly Travel Chapter leader, where they will apply their learning from first year to help build a climate resilient tourism community in their country.

KEY LEARNINGS

  • Understand why Climate Change is a dominant issue on the global agenda and recognize its major impact on Travel & Tourism
  • Follow the development and the science behind the impact of Climate Change on the components of Travel & Tourism – transport, hospitality services and destination activity.
  • Learn theoretical and practical aspects of Green Development strategy, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Understand the key elements of Climate Friendly Travel and how it will help transform the sector to meet the Paris carbon reduction targets.
  • Prepare for roles in companies, communities, and government, implementing long-term transformation.
