Our Climate Action

At Secret Paradise, we believe that the natural beauty and vibrant culture of the Maldives are treasures to be cherished and protected. The Maldives, often referred to as paradise on Earth, is on the front line of the climate crisis. The very existence of this island nation, composed of coral atolls and pristine beaches, is threatened by rising sea levels and the broader impacts of climate change. As a tour company deeply rooted in the Maldives, we understand that we have a unique responsibility to address these challenges head-on.

We believe it is vital for Secret Paradise to take action on climate change because this idyllic nation is not just our home; it’s our livelihood and the inspiration for the immersive and sustainable travel experiences we provide to our guests.
The Maldives’ susceptibility to climate-related issues, such as the bleaching of coral reefs, beach erosion,
extreme weather events, and the overall well-being of its marine life, underscores the urgency of our efforts.
We have witnessed changes in the environment and weather patterns since operations began in 2012, and we are committed to preserving the Maldives for future generations.

As a sustainable tour company, it is crucial for Secret Paradise to have a Climate Action Plan in place. We have a deep-rooted commitment to responsible and positive impact travel. Our guests travel with the intent of experiencing the natural beauty, culture, and marine life of the Maldives. To continue offering these experiences, it is our duty to ensure that the environment, which is integral to our tours, remains pristine and healthy.

Our Climate Action Plan outlines our strategies for reducing our carbon footprint, conserving natural resources, and engaging in practices that minimize the impact of tourism on the Maldivian environment. Our commitment to climate action goes hand in hand with the Nature-based Solutions Initiative and the Maldives Tourism Climate Action Plan, which was published September 2023. We have where possible aligned our actions with the broader goals set forth in this national strategy. By taking these proactive steps, we aim to set an example in the industry and inspire responsible tourism practices in the Maldives and beyond. We understand that responsible tourism is not just an option; it’s a necessity to protect the delicate balance of our planet and the beautiful Maldives that we call home.

In the information that follows, you will discover the specifics of our Climate Action Plan and how we are committed to leading the way in sustainable and climate-conscious travel. Together, we can make a positive impact, mitigate the effects of climate change, and ensure that the Maldives remains the paradise it is meant to be.

OUR CLIMATE ACTION AIMS

DECARBONISATION

Decarbonisation stands as a cornerstone of our Climate Action Plan, rooted in the necessity to address the growing climate crisis. We are dedicated to measuring, reviewing and reducing our carbon emissions, recognizing that this proactive approach is critical for the Maldives, a nation on the frontline of climate change, to thrive and endure.

ADAPTION

We acknowledge the challenges posed by a changing climate. We are committed to building climate resilience within our operations, ensuring that our tours and the communities we work with can adapt and thrive in the face of evolving environmental conditions.

ECOSYSTEM REGENERATION

Taking action to restore and protect the natural environments in the Maldives, including coral reefs, marine life, seagrass, and mangroves. This is essential not only for preserving the natural beauty of the Maldives but also for maintaining a critical line of defense against the impact of climate change.

COMMUNITY & STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

We recognize that the success of our sustainability efforts relies on partnerships and collective action. Engaging local communities and fostering guest awareness is crucial in ensuring that our commitment to climate action extends beyond our operations and into the hearts and minds of all those who visit the Maldives.

COMMUNICATION

Communication holds a central role as it is the action that connects our efforts with our guests, partners, and the broader community. Transparent communication is essential to inspire collective action, raise awareness about climate challenges, and underscore our commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism.

OUR CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

Our Climate Action Plan is focused on the actions we will be taking in addition to the actions and initiatives that we already have in place.  In line with the Glasgow Climate Declaration our plan is broken down into 4 areas:

Measure, Decarbonise, Regenerate and Collaborate.

Each year we will update our plan to include our goals for the coming year, and publish a transparent report sharing our carbon footprint for the year, and assessing our progress against each of the goals we have set.
